Synopsis:

Challenging religion is a crime, but for a woman it becomes an unpardonable sin. Peeking into this veiled reality is Alif, the story of a woman who braves the outrage of patriarchy. Alif maps the lives of four generations of Muslim women, their plight and struggle for survival. Fathima, the lead character, is a deserted wife living with her mother and grandmother. Fathima's conservative life takes an unexpected spin when she challenges their Usthad, a religious scholar, at a public sermon. This causes a lot of outrage and her family is ostracised. The film shows Fathima's ensuing struggle.

Medsho.in

This is one movie that has very few drawbacks and stands out as a serious cinema, one that can be put under the category of a powerful film with a bold content.

Metromatinee

'Alif' is definitely a film that deserves a watch mainly because of its thematic contemporaneity and universality.

Indiaglitz

‘Alif’ is one movie that is  a must watch for its cinematic sincerity and bold theme which is elated by its sensitive directional calibre of  N K Muhammed Koya. Undoubtedly, this is one good movie of the year, to make  it into the list of bests in 2015.

Times of India

Mohammed Koya's Alif is powerful and poignant at the same time, probably the most compelling woman centric film made in the recent times.

Sify

Alif is tailor made for the awards circuit. The issues being handled are perhaps relevant but there are not many things that we have seen before in this one.

Nowrunning

'Alif' creeps slowly under your skin and stays right there, refusing to let go. Deftly scripted, brilliantly acted and tautly directed, it is a riveting drama that leaves you all shaken. Tantalizing and troubling in equal measure, 'Alif' has plenty in store to draw and hold your eye.

Lensmen Movie Review Center

Alif is a tale that has a strong and relevant subject which sadly needs to be seen even in these days of progressive thinking.
